Why Stern Village is The Jewel of Trumbull

Stern Village is a Community within a Community

Formed in 1970, Stern Village sits on 16.14 acres next to Beaches Memorial Park. There are 49 cottage buildings located in a park-like setting.

Stern Village has 186 existing units (100 efficiencies and 86 one-bedrooms). Stern Center, the  Congregate Building has 36 efficiency units.

-Residents know they are getting safe, sanitary and affordable housing and are part of a vibrant and active community.

-Offer several weekly and monthly activities in our Community Room, The Hub of Stern Village. These include a Friendsgiving Celebration, Holiday Parties, Annual Picnic, Mother’s and Father’s Day Breakfasts, Veteran’s Day Luncheon, Ice Cream Socials, a THA Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast, and many more events. Healthcare agencies provide luncheons and workshops.

-The THA Community Room has a generator and can be an emergency shelter in an emergency.

-Bread day is every Wednesday, thanks to Stop & Shop of Trumbull.

-Food Pantry stocked with non-perishable foods is located in the Community Room. Household essentials are occasionally donated for residents as well.

-Robo Call System and The Stern Village Voice Newsletter alerts residents of activities.

-Computers were donated by Cooperative Education Services and we have held computer classes.

-Counselors from the Mary J. Sherlach Counseling Center have office hours at Stern Village.

-Paulette Mack, a Resident Services Coordinator, helps residents with Medicare, Title 19, and the like.

-Executive Director Harriet Polansky has an open door policy and is available to every resident.

-Received a grant for outside furniture for Stern Village and the Congregate. A beautiful table and chair set complete with an umbrella was recently purchased with a gift card generously donated by restorative company ServPro.

-Received a grant for a large, flat-screen TV for the Community Room.  “Friday Night at the Movies” is held twice a month.

-Trumbull Rotary donated cots, blankets, and sheets, as well as directional signs for Stern Village.

-Trumbull Helps provides special dinner parties for our residents.

-Each year The Nichols Garden Club provides Valentine Floral Arrangements for our over 90+-year-old residents.

-Receive donations from several companies to pay for our annual THA picnic including food, entertainment, decorations and the rental of chairs and tables.

-Receive donations for Friendsgiving and Christmas gifts for resident volunteers.

-Received a Wii game system and games from Aquarion Water Company. Thursday night is game night in the Community Room.

-Members of the Long Hill Garden Club have a monthly activity for residents.

-A regulation pool table and accessories were donated to the Community Room.

-Provide Art Therapy twice a month.

-Wellness coach provides chair-exercises, breathing techniques, yarn arts and other tranquil activities.

-Work with Eagle Scouts on beautification projects including a Bocce Ball Court for spring of 2018.

-Home Depot created a horseshoe court and community garden.

-Partner with University of Bridgeport Social Services Department. Their students receive credit for working with our residents.

-Trumbull Housing Corporation our 501(c)3 was created to support the THA. The Trumbull Housing Corporation received $20,000 from Newtown Savings Bank for new, energy-efficient windows for Stern Center-Congregate.

-Partner with The Kennedy Center, which provides weekly grocery shopping to our residents and volunteers to clean the THA offices and Community Room.

-Cooperative Education Services delivers Bruegger’s Bagels every Friday.

-Work with various agencies to find employment for our residents.
